Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

Through a Title VI grant from the US department of Education (US/ED), the Consortium for the Study of the Asias, in collaboration with the Institute for Global Studies, offers Summer 2015 and Academic Year 2015-2016 FLAS fellowships to promote the study of modern foreign Asian languages at the intermediate or advanced level.

All Asian languages taught at the University of Minnesota (Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hmong, Hindi, and Urdu) are FLAS eligible languages. In addition to those languages, approval of which is automatic, there is a possibility to study other Asian languages through CIC course Share during the academic year and through study at another US institution or abroad during the summer.

Funding available:

  • Summer: $2,500 living stipend PLUS up to $5,000 for tuition and selected fees
  • Academic Year: $5,000 living stipend PLUS up to $10,000 for tuition and selected fees.

The application deadline is Monday, February 9, 2015.

CSA will be holding a series of informational meetings for graduate students about FLAS and the application procedure. The meetings are scheduled for

  • Tuesday, January 27 from 3:30 till 4:30 p.m. in room 113 Folwell Hall (east bank)

  • Tuesday, February 3, from 3:30 till 4:30 in room 260 Social Sciences (west bank)

  • Thursday, February 5, from 11:00 a.m. till 12:00 a.m in 260 Social Sciences (west bank)

Internships: Mapping Transitions Through the Vehicle of the Arts

Advanced undergraduate students are invited to apply for funding for internship opportunities where the students creates a research or artistic project as a means to further promote the collaborations outlined by Mapping Transitions through the Vehicle of the Arts.
