Teacher Stipends

To support the improvement of instruction of Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs), the University of Minnesota's National Resource Centers offer a limited number of $600 stipends for LCTL teachers to help defray the cost of attending any of the CARLA summer institutes. The Consortium for the Study of the Asias a Title VI National Resource Center, is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and sponsor this program as part of their mission to support LCTL teachers.

Eligibility

The purpose of the Teacher Stipends is the enhancement of LCTL teaching in the United States. Therefore, persons who do not teach an LCTL in the United States and who are not American citizens or permanent residents are NOT eligible.

Teachers of European and International (non-Asia related) Less-Commonly-Taught Languages (LCTLs) can apply for Teacher Stipends from the European Studies Consortium and Institute for Global Studies .

Please note that preference will be given to language teachers outside of the University of Minnesota. University of Minnesota language teachers may apply for tuition waivers offered by CARLA. Please contact the CARLA office at carla@umn.edu for more information.

Information About the Stipends

  • • Registration for the CARLA summer institutes prior to the application deadline is recommended to ensure a place in any of these popular institutes. Almost all of the institutes filled to capacity
    last year.

    • Per Title VI funding regulations, stipends can only be awarded for less commonly taught foreign languages, and not U.S. indigenous languages unless those languages are also indigenous to countries outside the U.S.

    • Stipends may not be awarded to foreign nationals as per Title VI funding regulations; however, a foreign national who possesses a green card and is teaching a LCTL in the U.S. may apply for a stipend.

    • Stipends cannot be awarded to applicants who live in the Twin Cities area; however applicants may apply for a waiver of the cost of the institute (a value of $300) through the same process. University of Minnesota LCTL teachers should contact Karin Larson in the CARLA office for a special waiver opportunity.

    • Stipends are processed once the summer institute begins and take 3-4 weeks to process.
