South Asian Studies at the University of Minnesota consists of an active research community spanning a wide variety of disciplines across the Humanities and Social Sciences such as Art History, Geography, Theater Arts and Dance, Asian Languages and Literature and Sociology to name a few. Institutions and organizations such as the South Asia Seminar, the Ames Library of South Asia, the India Center Initiative as well as student organizations, language and study abroad programs are only part of a vital network seeking new ways to understand this culturally and geographically diverse region. Through the Consortium for Study of the Asias students, artists, community activists and faculty working on issues of South Asia are brought together to share their ideas, encouraging cross-disciplinary co-operation and critique to create a uniquely nontraditional scholastic environment that seeks to break many of the disciplinary barriers of traditional Area Studies programs.
